Movie screens across New Zealand are glowing brighter after a record-breaking long weekend at the box office. The combination of the opening weekend of highly anticipated animated sequel, Inside Out 2, alongside a strong showing from Despicable Me 4 and the chilling A Quiet Place: Day One, delivered a whopping 254,000 admissions – the biggest movie weekend since the Barbenhimer phenomenon weekend of July 2023.

Leading the charge was Inside Out 2, which exploded onto the global stage, achieving record-breaking success at the box office. The film debuted with a staggering $295 million worldwide, marking the highest global animated opening of all time, and has now surpassed a billion dollars – the fastest animated title to ever do so.

Inside Out 2's domestic performance was equally impressive, delivering over 114,000 admits in its opening weekend, whilst representing strongly amongst Families and P14-24 (41%).

The film raked in staggering $2.0 million, making it second-biggest opening weekend for an animated film in New Zealand history, trailing only the juggernaut Shrek 2 back in 2004. Inside Out 2 also holds the crown for the biggest opening of any film in 2024, and with school holidays on the horizon, looks set for a record-breaking run.

However, the success wasn't limited to just Inside Out 2. Despicable Me 4 proved its enduring popularity, adding another 46,000 admissions to its already impressive total of 134,000. Meanwhile, A Quiet Place: Day One scared its way into third place for the opening weekend, while the powerful local documentary Ka Whawhai Tonu - Struggle Without End and the visually stunning Indian epic Kalki 2898AD rounded out the top five, showcasing both the strength and diversity of the current movie slate.

Matt Tremain, Sales Director, New Zealand said “These fantastic results set the stage for an incredible second half of 2024! The blockbuster titles are set to explode, with action-packed adventures like Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker: Folie à Deux to the magical worlds of Wicked and the return of Gladiator. Not to mention even bigger families hits with Mufasa: The Lion King, and Moana 2 rounding out this years’ incredible movie slate.”
