CinemaCon attendees were treated to the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home — a day after it was leaked online and was quickly blocked by Sony.
Addressing the leak, Sony film boss Tom Rothman said, “It deserves to be seen in the high-quality finished form in which it was made” while the studio also took to its official Twitter account to say, “shout-out to the real ones who are watching the trailer for the first time right now.”
After a long 12 months of speculation, the anticipated trailer confirms that the plot will span the multiverse and see Tom Holland go head to head with villains from past Spider-Man cinematic franchises, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.
Variety reports that earlier in 2021, Molina revealed his story will “pick up right from the moment in Spider-Man 2 where Doc Ock sinks in the East River with his unstable nuclear reactor to save the city.”
Zendaya will also return to reprise her role as MJ, while Jacob Batalon is back as Ned Leeds, Marisa Tomei is Aunt May once more and Benedict Wong makes a comeback as Wong. Jon Favreau also appears again as Happy Hogan and filmmaker Jon Watts return to direct his third instalment in the Holland-led series.
There has also been a huge push from fans to see past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return for No Way Home, but nothing has been confirmed on that front.
The trailer features Holland, as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, telling Zendaya’s MJ, “For the record, I never wanted to lie to you. But how do you tell somebody you are Spider-Man?” which is a very fair question.
Parker then looks to Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange for help, before the two of them are thrust into the multiverse and the dangers within.
Fans have been incredibly vocal about their hunger for a sneak peek at the hugely anticipated film, and have taken to social media in droves begging for updates. Now that the trailer has finally been revealed, fans gathered on Twitter once more to share their reactions.
“I have now accepted the fact that failing to record my fiancé’s reaction to the #SpiderManNoWayHomeTrailer is the biggest mistake of my life,” one user wrote, while another enthused (in all caps) “THAT SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME TRAILER WAS EVERYTHING!”
No Way Home’s predecessor — 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home — currently ranks as Sony’s highest-grossing film ever, having earned $1.132 billion globally. However, if the early reactions are anything to go by, it could well be about to be dethroned.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in New Zealand cinemas on 26 December 2021.
