The Little Mermaid Is Set To Make A Big Splash This May.
The highly anticipated live action family film, The Little Mermaid, will be swimming into cinemas on May 25.
The original Disney animation was released back in 1989 and is incredibly well-known and deeply loved by multiple generations of fans from across the globe.
Here’s what we know about The Little Mermaid so far:
It features a star-studded cast.
Emerging star, Halle Bailey will be taking on the role of Ariel, and Jonah Hauer-King will be playing her love interest, Prince Eric.
Melissa McCarthy is taking on the role of Ursula, the evil sea witch. With a large fan base, and a bank of highly popular films and shows, McCarthy fans are expecting great things and are sure she will deliver the villain role to perfection.
Other members of the cast include Daveed Digs as Sebastian the crab and Lin Manuel Miranda as Chef Louis, who both previously starred in Hamilton, the musical.
The film will feature magical new songs.
Composer Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote new songs for the movie, including:
‘For The First TIme’ – Sung by Ariel (Halle Bailey).
‘Wild Unchartered Waters’ – Sung by Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).
‘Scuttlebutt’ – Sung by Sebastian and Scuttle (Daveed Diggs and Awkwafina).
‘Impossible Child’ – Sung by King Triton (Javier Bardem)
In addition to the new songs, there will also be changes to a couple of the original songs from the Disney classic, including ‘Kiss The Girl’ and ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’.
The plot will follow the direction of the original Disney classic, however how closely, remains a mystery.
Although we know the film is going to be based on the plot of the original Disney film, there is still an element of mystery with regards to the direction of the storyline, and how much it’s going to differ from the classic tale.
Let’s revisit the original story:
We know that 16-year-old Ariel, a young mermaid princess, finds herself dreaming of the human world, however she is forbidden by her father King Triton from going to the surface, as he warns her that humans are dangerous. She falls in love with a human, Prince Eric and ends up saving him from drowning.
She makes a deal with a sea witch, Ursula, giving up her voice in order to become human, but she must receive a human kiss within three days, or she forever belongs to Ursula.
Ariel ends up marrying Prince Eric and living a human life on land with him. But will this differ in the upcoming live action adaptation? It seems we are going to be kept on our toes… or tails!
