Cinema Sees A Hugely Successful First Half Of 2022, And It’s Not Over Yet!

With a steady stream of major blockbusters having been released over recent months, audiences have been racing into cinemas, delivering a outstanding result for the first half of 2022.

  • 4.57 million admissions

  • 36% increase compared to H1 2021

  • 176,000 average weekly admissions

In the last six months, both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top Gun: Maverick have blown away expectations and cemented themselves in the top ten films of all time in New Zealand. Their record-breaking success is a testament to Kiwi’s desire to get back to the cinema and experience the best stories in the world.

  • Top Gun: Maverick delivered $12 million at the box office, and earned the position of #8 film of all time in New Zealand.

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home delivered $11.9 million at the box office, and scored #9 film of all time.

Young Kiwis have been a driver of cinema’s resurgence in H1, with a string of youth-skewed blockbusters all performing strongly. Cinema has offered the perfect opportunity for brands to target this hard-to-reach demographic, with 2.5 million P14-39 admissions to date accounting for 55% of the total cinema audience. This result also sits +42% up year on year.

Key youth titles included Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore, Jackass Forever, The Batman, and Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness.

What’s To Come Before The End Of The Year
