Vin Diesel, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Michelle Rodriguez. They’re the star-studded cast that return film after film in the long-running Fast & Furious franchise. But there’s a whole fleet of co-stars that characterise the Fast Saga – and they are, of course, the cars.

Never known for realism, the franchise’s increasingly elaborate car stunts are once again turned up another level, this time even taking a trip to space!

Stunts like this are no simple feat, and its clear the franchise takes a no-expense (but several vehicles) spared approach to truly bring the action to life.

This behind-the-scenes look at F9 shows how director Justin Lin fuses daunting car manoeuvres with advanced special effects to craft the Fast Saga’s signature action-ruckus. Because why default to CGI when you can propel a car through a building and into a moving truck when you can do it in real life?

Incredibly, the film’s wildest set piece, a “magnet plane” that is able to attract and repel metal objects around it, including other vehicles, came from the mind of Justin Lin's nine-year-old son.

"We were in London for a week, and I had my son Oqwe with me, and the only way we could hang out was that he would come to the meetings with me," Lin said.

"We were talking about the ravine and I said, 'Alright... Jakob needs to get to the other side – how does he get there?' And Oqwe just picked it up and pitched the idea of the plane and everything… After us spending hundreds of hours on planning, I guess he was paying attention, and he understood the characters."

Fast & Furious 9 hits Aussie screens on 17th June.
