Fast & Furious 9 is off to a racing start, speeding to a monstrous $162.4M at the global box office this weekend! The latest Fast & Furious instalment marks the biggest debut at the international box office of the pandemic-era.
F9 took in $135.6 million in China alone, making it the first Hollywood blockbuster to open at over $100 million in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The film also marked the Fast Saga’s biggest opening day in Korea and Hong Kong and topped Covid-age records in Russia and the UAE, where it opened at $6.4M and $5.5M respectively.
Results like these — markedly for the ninth instalment in a film franchise and amidst the pandemic — are a true representation of our long-standing, unwavering love affair with the cinema. The street racing action film that was The Fast and Furious twenty years ago has evolved into a global adventure institution with warm family values at its core. Where strong content lies, audiences will follow in droves.
In the US, Spiral: From the Book of Saw accrued another $4.5M, taking the Saw franchise to a new milestone of $1B globally across its nine films!
It seems moviegoer confidence never waned in the U.K. Last week cinema-lovers were treated to their first taste of the big screen since November 2020, with cinemas reopening post-lockdown on 17th May. It was an overwhelmingly positive first weekend, with Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway grossing more than £7M. The beloved animated family flick was the second biggest opening in the U.K. since the pandemic began, behind only Tenet.
U.K. exhibitor Odeon announced over 300,000 tickets were sold throughout their opening week, with close to 60% of audiences viewing Peter Rabbit 2.
