First, they conquered Skull Island; now they conquer the world.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla Vs. Kong continues to deliver monstrous results across the globe and is set to become the biggest Covid-era grosser yet. Currently screening in nearly 40 markets, the film has amassed a global total to $357.8 million at the box office, and after just three weeks in-cinema, is fast approaching the global cumulative box office takings of Tenet, which grossed $363 million in its total run.
China has accounted for the lion’s share, grossing $165.4 million since release. The US follows accruing nearly $70 million to date. Alongside Australia ($16 million), Mexico ($15.8 million), Taiwan ($11.7 million) and Russia ($11.1 million) have also delivering sizeable results.
What makes Godzilla vs. Kong’s performance so impressive, is its ability to generate substantial grosses despite the fact that in the U.S. market, the content is readily available on HBO Max. In several film markets, theatres also continue to operate under limited seating capacity. As such the results indicate a true shift in consumer confidence. Audiences are comfortable and willing to return to the cinema environment, valuing the content and experience which simply cannot be replicated at home.
It must be said that while cinema has been charging locally, there has been a dull, ominous sense that a global theatrical recovery is beyond reach. In contrast, the worldwide success of Godzilla Vs. Kong proves that a mass audience return is not just possible – it is a reality.
Locally, more than 920,000 Australians have flocked to the cinema to experience the monster-scale battle royale on the big screen.
Described as a ‘special effects extravaganza’ the epic blockbuster imagines a battle of the ages between two of cinema’s most iconic beasts. Catch Godzilla Vs. Kong in cinemas now.
