Joaquin Phoenix leads a cinematic revolution as Napoleon.

The allure of legendary figures and epic historical tales has always captivated movie-goers, but when these are brought to life under the masterful direction of someone like Ridley Scott, they become nothing short of cinematic marvels. This time, Scott turns his lens towards one of history’s most intriguing characters – Napoleon Bonaparte, with none other than the enigmatic Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix stepping into the shoes of the French emperor.

This isn't the first time that Phoenix has played a tyrannical ruler for Scott, as he memorably did so in the 2000 film Gladiator, in which he portrayed the ruthless roman ruler Commodus. In conversation with Variety, the actor said it wasn’t too tough of a decision to sign up for another film directed by Scott, “The truth is, there was just a very nostalgic idea of working with Ridley again,” Phoenix said. “I had such an incredible experience working with Ridley on Gladiator, and I was so young. It was my first big production. I really yearned for that experience again, or something similar."

Napoleon is a spectacle-filled action epic that takes us on a thrilling journey through the checkered rise and fall of the legendary French Emperor. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a captivating performance as Napoleon Bonaparte, showcasing his relentless pursuit of power against a backdrop of stunning large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by the legendary Ridley Scott. The film delves into Bonaparte’s addictive and volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, portrayed by the talented, Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby. Through their tumultuous romance, we witness the visionary military and political tactics that defined Napoleon’s reign. Josephine’s character anchors the love story amidst the political turmoil, offering a counterpoint to the intense battle scenes and political machinations that set the pace of the film.

Napoleon promises to immerse audiences in the visceral reality of war. It showcases the grandeur of Napoleon’s military campaigns and the visionary strategies that made him one of the greatest military minds in history. As such, the film is poised to be a veritable feast for history buffs and cinema connoisseurs alike. Brace yourself for some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever captured on film.

Napoleon arrives in cinemas November 23.
