Venice Film Festival brings standing ovations to two upcoming films and kicks off the Oscar Nomination speculation

This month kicked off the start of the Venice Film Festival, which saw audiences getting sneak peaks of some of the most anticipated films to be released this year. So far this year, we have seen two standing ovations for Jane Campion’s period drama, The Power of the Dog and the much-anticipated film about Diana, Princess of Wales, Spencer.

The Power of the Dog, based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, tells the story of a 1920’s Montana farmer who stews in anger over the marriage of his brother George and his new bride.

Spencer has quickly emerged as the key contender, both in box office terms and for awards consideration. Audiences were able to get a first look at Kristen Stewart in her portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales, which saw the film receive a 5-minute standing ovation. Spencer tells story of Diana during her Christmas holiday with the royal family in England, in which she decided to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.

In recent years, the Venice Film Festival has become a launching pad for the Oscars. As the Film Festival season has kicked off, there are already many speculations as to who may take out the top awards at the Oscars next year:

  • Will Smith is a front runner for Best Actor in his role of Richard Williams in King Richard

  • Kristen Stewart is a front runner for Best Actress for her Portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales in Spencer

  • Power of the Dog leads the race for Best Adapted Screenplay

  • Kenneth Branagh is a strong contender for winning Best Director for his film Belfast

  • Belfast is also the front runner to take out the Best Picture
